Abstract

The purpose of this research is to examine the status and functions of dialect in modern literature and to look for a possibility that dialect can be adapted to education of literature based on living, cultural and systematic characteristics. First through the current trend of dialect research, we have investigated how the dichotomy to divide dialect and standard language has started and which mechanism contributes to maintaining it, and from the result of that investigation, we checked how dialect has been adapted in the research on literature and its text book up to now. In the research on literature, generally effectiveness of dialect adaptation, one of which is the pursuit of realism, locality, empathy or inspiration of nationalism, rhythm and imagery effect, etc. Although each text of literature has different theme to convey and different style and expression, the result when dialect is applied to literature texts is almost the same for the reason that it reflects the viewpoint that dialect is regarded as manifestation of sound. Finally studying the aspect of how dialect functions in materialization of the goal of literature education such as discovery of individuals and community, recovery of capability to communicate with things and the world, analysis of ideology, target orientation, etc, we also suggested the direction to practice the ideology of literature education. We believe that this process will enable dialects, as a key word to connect subject to literature to culture, become a vehicle in order that literature education settle down as a part of cultural education.
