Abstract

Before the period of 1st National Curriculum Standards(NCS's), including the colonial period, liberation period and ‘teaching syllabus’ period, all textbooks contained modern poetries. This paper, I discussed the logical basis of modern poetry education in period of NCS's by investigating on poetry education before the NCS's. Poetry education in colonial period taught the moral training and discipline. The education by the time was designed for colonial purpose. After the liberation, poetry education focused on the national consciousness and emotionality while politically left poetries were excluded. Poetry education continued during the Korean War. However, the war itself did not have so much influence over the poetries educated in the textbook;lyrical poetries were still the mainstream. Poetry Education before the NCS's tried to teach the morality or nature-friendly concepts rather than having critical views over the world. The modern poetry education of NCS's started on this basis.
