Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to examine the nature and objectives of the ‘Inter-Korean common Korean’ course (hereafter, ‘common Korean’) that the two Koreas will commonly use during the transition period to unification. First of all, we suggest the characteristics of ‘common Korean’ as (1) the course that put mutual understanding of language culture of North and South Korea as the priority; (2) that is forming an attitude of mutual respect and consideration for each other’s language culture; (3) that is aimed at integrating the two Korean language cultures; and (4) that should inherit and complement Korean language education between the two Koreas. In addition, the objectives of the common language was set in terms of knowledge, function and attitude. This study suggests the objectives of the course as (1) understanding the commonalities and differences between the two Koreas’ language culture in terms of knowledge; (2) using the Korean language correctly and appropriately in various communication situations between the two Koreas in terms of function; and (3) respecting the other’s language culture and making a sense of attitude toward and contributing to the integration of language culture between the two Koreas in terms of attitude.
