Implications of Vietnam’s Adoption of Korean as a First Foreign Language in Public Education

Abstract

This study examines the status of Korean language education, as it was adopted as a first language in Vietnam’s elementary, middle, and high school foreign language curricula. Further, it explores its background and adoption process to identify policy implications for overseas Korean language distribution projects. To this end, the foreign language education policy and curriculum of Vietnam’s Ministry of Education were analyzed, and the policy implications for other countries were derived by considering the. First, phased support is needed for the status of in each country, as well as the educational stage. Second, in addition to native Korean experts in Korea, cooperation with local Korean language experts should be strengthened. Finally, a sequential approach is needed to promote Korean language education for adult learners, centered on local universities’ Korean language departments, before being spread to elementary and secondary education.
