Abstract

This study focused on the homogeneity between partners in analyzing the determinants influencing knowledge acquisition by Korean partners from foreign partners in international joint ventures established in Korea. Specifically, the study analyzed that greater homogeneity between joint venture partners in terms of national culture, corporate culture, and management practices is positively related to the knowledge acquired by Korean partners from foreign partners. Additional control variables considered included the learner's learning capability, learning intent, and control rights (ownership equity). This study differentiated knowledge into two forms—explicit knowledge and tacit knowledge—and demonstrated that congruence in national culture and strategic management serves as a positive factor for tacit knowledge learning, which requires social bonding, but shows no statistically significant results for explicit knowledge acquisition. In contrast, the control variables of learning capability and learning intent were confirmed to play important roles in learning regardless of the nature of the knowledge.
