Abstract
Through communication, we not only transmit information or know- ledge, but also try to bring about emotional responses from others’inside and trigger changes in their behavior and thinking. Rhetoric is a linguistic device to make such expressive effects possible. Thus, this study tries to fill up the theory of contents in Korean language education by freshly dealing with the existing rhetoric knowledge in the dimensions of intention and effects of expression. This study analyzes modern poetry texts where intentions and effects of rhetoric expressions show up condensed and concentrated, and take the rhetoric interrogative expression as its object. This study investigates types of rhetoric interrogative expression by dividing them into four types with other-orientedness and degrees of modality, i.e. strengths revealing messages and explains each type’s expressive effects. We can classify rhetoric interrogative expressions into four types such as (1) requesting changes in behavior, (2) sharing realizations and feelings, (3) raising questions to oneself (4) transmitting meanings paradoxically. The results of this study can help to plan certain educational contents that allow learners to correctly read meanings of poetic rhetoric, and make a linguistic structure that transmits one’s expressive intentions effectively.
