Abstract
The purpose of this review study is to synthesize major findings regarding the effects of motivation and engagement in reading. In order to structure discussion, first, the concepts of motivation and engagement in reading are briefly reviewed. Second, major research findings regarding the effects of motivation and engagement in reading are synthesized with three categories: 1) reading frequency, the amount of reading time and the amount of reading, 2) reading comprehension and achievement, and 3) the affective consequences and benefits. Then, focusing on two controversial issues, I discuss the reasons research consumers should take a critical view and scrutinize all processes of research regarding this topic. Finally, five research ideas and comments are provided for further research in the field of reading engagement.
