Abstract
Study on speech difference between the two Koreas by interview with “Saetermin” Yang, Soo-kyung Kwon, Soon-heeIt is expected that severance of time and space and socio-cultural differences between the South Korea and the North Korea after 60 years' division have made speech difference between the two Koreas. Speech difference between the two Koreas has been revealed by analyzing the daily conversation of “Saetemin(the defectors from north Korea)”. For this study, the North Korean speech was analyzed through severe interviews with Saetemin living in Seoul. The representative differences found in this study are the point of view on speech, indirect speech, male and female speech, and official and private speech. The most serious difference between two Korea is indirect speech, the difference of which can cause conflict and misunderstanding during daily conversation. In contrast with South Korean, Seatemin have traditional point of view on speech which is stressing careful attitude and reflecting social status. The difference in the official and private speech was found not to be serious. However persons under thirties who learned the North Korean speech use the emotional expressions of the “Juche” ideology. Consequently younger generations of the two Koreas might show the bigger difference in the official and private speech. This study would help Saetemin settle in the South Korea and would be a chance to discuss speech difference between the two Koreas.
