Teaching Integrated Essay-writing in Regular Classes

Abstract

As all of you might agree, teaching essay-writing in Korea seems to be greatly distorted and biased. What should be responsible for this is we have put students not in the center but in the fringes and that grown-ups only try to pursue their own benefit. Without positioning students in the heart of the matter there would be no possible solution as far as teaching essay-writing is concerned. Four purposes should be taken into consideration when we teach essay-writing to students. First, students should be encouraged to have a wider, deeper, higher thinking capacity. Second, they should be given the power to show their thoughts off to people. Third, they should be educated to successfully communicate with others. Fourth, our society should proceed to be the one in which the students can enjoy dialogues and debates. Unfortunately, however, the above mentioned statements are at present out of concern in this country. Everyone is only interested in the college entrance examination, which will not only leave us far from the nature of essay-writing but also from appropriate preparation for the college entrance itself. We should, therefore, seek the right way to teach essay-writing. The essence of teaching essay-writing lies in making our regular classes assume upright stance. We should facilitate a variety of students’ activities instead of making them cram and memorize a massive amount of knowledge, and in the meantime students would develop their power of thinking. With this power they would grow to be a successful communicator and, on top of that, to get themselves ready for essay-writing for college entrance.
