Aspects of Peer Responses and Their Reactions in College Writing Composition

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate what kind of responses college student writers would have to the reports of their peers and how they would react the peer responses to their reports. For that purpose, the researcher obtained primary data from the reports of 78 college students, who were asked to read the peer responses to their reports and think over whether they would accept them or not. Peer responses were categorized into appropriateness of topics, feasibility of arguments and reasons, appropriateness of expression and systematic structure and consideration of readers. As a result, the college students made diverse responses to the reports of their peer writers and usually focused on the feasibility of arguments and reasons, and systematic structure. Then the aspects of the ways they reacted responses were analyzed. The analysis results show that they usually accepted peer responses but sometimes would reserve their decision or reject them. Those responses indicate that the content pointed out in the peer responses is not always reflected in the report. Since the study focused on peer responses to writing works themselves, follow-up study needs to investigate peer responses including various interactions for more active research discussions in the field.
