A Study on the Direction of Debate Evaluation Based on Analysis of Debate Judging Paradigms

Abstract

Debate evaluation is the essential part for the sustainable improvement of debate education. comparing to the importance of debate evaluation, domestic researches of this part are very few. so I intended to gain implications on the direction of debate evaluation through investigating of controversy on debate judging paradigms which are discussed in 'National Debate Tournament' and 'Cross Examination Debate Association'. I generalized controversy on debate judging paradigms focused on 'Stock issue paradigm', 'Policy making paradigm', 'Hypothesis-Testing paradigm', 'Tabula Rasa paradigm', 'Speaking skill paradigm.'. and I described each paradigm of distinction and analyzed each of merits and disadvantages. and I also discussed the elements of debate evaluation which are the subject of evaluation, the contents of evaluation, the method of evaluation, based on the results of analysis. From the direction of debate evaluation, it is suggested that In-depth discussion and Philosophical contemplation on the Essence of debate should be accomplished before developing a standard debate evaluation check-list. and I also proposed the concept of debate evaluation should be enlarged to support various kinds of debate activities.
