Conceptualization of ‘the consciousness of Korean Language’ and its educational interpretation

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore a direction for educational realization through conceptualization of ‘the consciousness of Korean Language’ and its educational interpretation. Through reviewing existing study and grammar education process, a meaning of ‘the consciousness of Korean Language’ was conceptualized as follows. 1. Curiosity and inquiry spirit about language itself which is human essential characteristic, that is, ‘national language’2. Reflective study about use of national language by individual : language meta consciousness and logical thinking 3. Attitude and view of value about ‘national language’ : formation of spirit In the educational process of grammar, ‘the consciousness of Korean Language ‘ was clearly shown and suggested on formation of words and criteria of content related to Korean language history. Part of formation of words emphasizes formation of the consciousness of Korean Language in the cognitive aspect through exploration of formation process of new words. The content related to Korean language history focuses on formation of spirit in the emotional aspect through history of Korean language, especially, history of guarding Korean language, study of Korean language and activity to guard Korean language by predecessors. When interpreting ‘the consciousness of Korean Language’ as twofold structure, it would be necessary to establish criteria based on educational value and to logically organize educational process. For qualitative development of grammar education, it would be necessary to properly include value of the consciousness of Korean Language into existing educational content focusing on language unit. Formation of right ‘the consciousness of Korean Language’ forms ‘spirit’ of national people through Korean language and becomes basis of creating Korean language culture. And this could be a goal for grammar education.
