Abstract
The present study analyzed the issues of restructuring Korean curriculum for the free semester and the relation between the free semester class and the learner’s communication competence, given that the free semester system has launched over the entire nation. It also suggested the ways to improvement for a better free semester class. If the Korean curriculum is restructured for implementing free semester system, the number of lessons for Korean class is reduced. Besides, issues may arise in terms of overburdened class progress, discrepancy between the textbook and lecture, omission of important achievement criteria, and reduced opportunity for language performance. The response to the survey showed that a majority of learners feel that free semester class provided more opportunities for speech communication and that their communication skill progressed significantly due to the free semester class. They also agree with the necessity of speech communication class. More over, above responses were interrelated. The responses of the students were significantly different between the schools. The issues related with communication during the free semester class were emotional reaction in case of conflicting opinion during debate-discussion-conversation, lack of confidence during presentation, and lack of experience during interviewing. Based on the above results, the present study presented six ways to improve the Korean teaching-learning, focused on the communication education for better free semester system.
