Abstract
While the selection of information texts to be used in a classroom is subjective on the part of the teacher, it is essential that they provide texts that enhance students’ reading ability, attitude, and motivation. Thus, this study aimed to develop criteria for teachers to evaluate the characteristics of a text that affect the readability of information. Earlier research was reviewed to determine the following factors of text quality: objectives, topics, contents, structures, expressions, and auxiliary data. Further, survey data were used to secure 21 evaluation criteria, which were later revised to 12 based on expert consultation. Finally, 10 evaluation criteria were developed based on the assessments of 31 Korean language teachers.
