Abstract

This study analyzed nine textbooks of 『Common Korean Language 2』 to concretize the concept and educational plan of “social reading,” which introduced in the 2022 Revised Korean Language Curriculum. The analysis confirmed that social reading should fulfill both its method and purpose. Social reading can be defined as “reading that understands various perspectives and values by participating in communication with others through text, and seeks solutions to social problems.” To achieve the purpose and method of social reading, it is essential to provide texts that foster social awareness. Regarding the purpose, learning activities that encourage students to select texts addressing social issues while allowing for autonomy in choosing specific topics are effective. Regarding the method, learning activities that employ question-based approaches with step-by-step guidance are beneficial. Additionally, refining teaching methods that utilize digital media is crucial, and it is recommended to expand the scope of social reading to include both literary and non-literary texts.
