미국 공통핵심기준의 가능성과 한계에 대한 비판적 고찰 —읽기 영역을 중심으로—

초록

최근 미래 교육과정에 대한 관심과 함께 미국의 공통핵심성취기준에 대한 연구가 활발하다. 이 연구에서는 공통핵심기준이 설정하고 있는 10개의읽기 영역 중핵 기준들을 근거로 하여, 그 기저 핵심 능력을 (1) 자세히 읽기,(2) 다문서 읽기, (3) 디지털 매체 읽기, (4) 복잡한 텍스트 읽기, (5) 내용 교과 읽기로 범주화하였다. 그리고 이 다섯 가지 읽기 능력에 대한 설명이 지금까지 읽기 연구를 통해서 쌓아 온 과학적 지식에 어느 정도 부합하는지 비판적으로 고찰하였다. 그 결과, 미국의 공통핵심기준은 최신의 연구 경향을비교적 충실하게 반영하고 있는 것으로 볼 수 있었다. 그러나 그 세부 내용을따져보면, 읽기의 능력을 상당히 텍스트 중심적 분석 능력으로 국한하고 있었다. 이에 반하여 글을 읽는 주체인 독자와 관련된 다양한 요인들이 읽기의과정에 작용하는 양상과 그 의미 구성 과정에서 요구되는 복잡다단한 과정들에 관해서는 간과한 부분이 없지 않았다(예, 선행지식, 상위인지, 동기와 흥미). 따라서 독자의 성장에 요구되는 다양한 인지적, 정의적, 사회적, 발달적 역량에 대한 전제가 성취 기준 문서에 충분하게 고려되어 있지 않았다. 이와 관련하여, 최신의 문식성 및 읽기 분야의 연구에 근거하여 미국 핵심공통기준의읽기 역량이 함의하는 이론적, 실제적 가능성과 제한점을 논의하였다.
