Abstract

The Role of Korean Language Education in Multicultural EraWon, Jin-sookWhile Korean society has changed toward multicultural society very rapidly, the role of Korean language education as a social integration instrument for children in multicultural families is growing. In this paper, the author argues that Korean language education field must be expanded to include KSL(Korean as a second language) and bilingual education for children from multicultural families. She also examines that children from multicultural families have suffered from difficulties such as poverty, lack of Korean language proficiency, and crisis of identity in school. In addition, the study investigates the desirable Korean language educational direction by reviewing the language education policy of the most representative multicultural country, the United States of America.Children from multicultural families can be a very valuable social resource in our society if we help them overcome their language problems. Therefore, we have to support children from multicultural families through a powerful language education policy based on bilingual education and a KSL program in our public school system.
