A Study on the Language Ideology and Heritage Language Education

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to examine the directions of heritage language in multicultural society by exploring the correlation between language ideology and heritage language education. A society should embrace the values and briefs of minority group to attain the positive social integration. Especially, in language usage the mainstream society need to take note the language ideologies. Because the language ideology controls the linguistic attitude and behavior about heritage language. Language ideologies operating in heritage language education can be gauged on a continuum of pro-heritage language ideology on one end and anti-heritage language ideology on the other. The former promotes the use of heritage language by authorizing the meaningful valuation individually and socially. On the other hand, the latter opposes the heritage language education because it interferes in early adaptation to mainstream society. The directions for heritage language education are as below:1) the spread of positive awareness about the acquisition and use of minority language, 2) the establishment of family language policy, 3) the setting up family role structure, and 4) the expansion of communication opportunity through heritage language.
