Abstract

Fostering critical thinking should be a part of poetry education, given its benefits and relevance to literary analysis. The educational potential of critical thinking should be maximized to improve poetry education in school and enable students to think critically and logically while reading literatures. Among the properties of critical thinking involving various concepts and attributes, the ones that can be utilized for poetry education are as follows: analysis; evaluation; solving issues. Those can be utilized as a valuable method for poetry education in school, where students analyze literary works to understand the thinking of authors, reinterpret their perceptions through reflective questions, and explore solutions as realistic alternatives. Such poetry education could restore the fundamental functions of literary education that pursues two-way communication with authors, by cultivating the critical thinking of students.
