Honorific expression usages of participants in television current debate programs were analyzed in the assumption that participants use different honorific expression according to the age. From the survey of television current debate programs for children, youths, and adults, it was found that chairmen and debaters used different honorific expressions. All the chairmen use “HAPSYO" style in high frequency. On the contrary, the frequency and style of honorific expression usage of debaters were different from those of chairmen. Child debaters use “HAEYO" style in a frequency of 97.9%, young debaters use “HAPSYO" style in a frequency of 64.4%, and adult debaters use “HAPSYO" style in a frequency of 50% and “HAEYO" style in a frequency of 47.2%. These results show that the style of honorific expression usage of chairmen is different from that of debaters and that the styles of honorific expression usage are different among children, youths, and adults. Current study analyzing honorific expression usage on the basis of ages is different from previous studies that have analyzed it in the point of an individual language usage. The study of honorific expression usage should discuss the usage of language with due regard to social situation and relationship as well as human relationship. The paradigm of studying honorific expression usage should change from language user itself to language user in relation with social group.
