Abstract
Organizing the Contents of Speech Educationin the University StandardJeon, Eun-jooThis article comparatively analyzes the contents of speech education as a liberal education course. It aims to investigate the problems in organizing the contents of speech education in the university level and to provide a suggestion for an ideal contents organization for the speech education.Current education of speech in the university is mainly centered on the discourse and regards the debate as the most important discourse pattern. However, such an education policy is not differentiated from high school speech education since the discourse pattern chosen by the university is not much different from that of high school. More over, there is paucity of the criteria by which to choose a discourse pattern. Thus, sometimes a discourse pattern without practicability is picked up for education. When organizing educational contents, not only the contents but also the implementation of the contents should be taken into account. However, many cases analyzed in this study lack implementation. Besides, other issues have been revealed. For example, essential contents for understanding our speech and culture is missing from the curriculum and there is a wide variability in organizing the educational contents depending on the "instructor" factor.Caution must be exercised when we organize the educational contents for the university speech. They must be differentiated from the level and methods for high school speech education. Further more, when we set up the educational contents, we should focus on one or two and practice it (or them) intensively for the whole semester. Otherwise, we can consider providing a stepwise approach for the students, in which they can choose between a regular and an advanced course depending on the experience and the level of speech.
