An Analysis of the Language Section Items of Chinese College Entrance Exam-For Some Suggestions for CSAT

Abstract
We intended to derive some suggestion for CSAT(College Scholastic Ability Test) language test from Chinese college entrance exam which is called Kaogao in China. For this purpose, we surveyed Kaogao language test and analyzed passages, evaluation objectives, item types, item stems, alternatives and difficulty of Kaogao. The result is as follows. First, “knowledge” is as important element as “understanding”, “analyzing & synthesizing”, “expressing & applying” and “appreciating & criticizing” in Kaogao language test. Including knowledge-measuring items with existing ability-measuring ones, CSAT language test will drive high school students to study essential knowledge of Korean language subject. Second, the portion of vocabulary and grammar items is high in Kaogao language test. Considering our society has changed into multi-cultural one and students has used more incorrect language expression, we also need to strengthen teaching and assessing Korean vocabulary and grammar ability. Third, Kaogao language test includes items that students can solve only when they are able to the original classic texts. To boost literary culture based on understanding our own cultural heritage, We need to help students appreciate Korean classic literature as original. Forth, Kaogao language test includes plenty of constructed-response items. Including constructed-response items measuring authentic ability of thinking and expressing, CSAT language test will hold back individual university’s writing test causing private education. It also will help writing lesson in high school activated.
