A Study on the Conversation Scenes of the Remonstrance in Yuhyogongseonhaengrok and the Contents of Education for Improving the Conflict-Solving Speech Ability

Abstract

Devising a way of engaging everyday conversations in response to social conflicts has become an important task in Korean language education. To explore the way of such engagement, it is necessary to focus on family novels, including Yuhyogongseonhaengrok, which are rich in conversation scenes that reflect the culture of the remonstrance based on Confucian filial piety. These scenes represent how participants reveal and solve social conflicts in everyday conversations. In Yuhyogongseonhaengrok, the speaker of the remonstrance not only clearly reveals his/her social identity and sets out the point of social conflict with the opponent but also shows the way in finding clues to resolve conflict by reconstructing his/her social identity that can be shared with the opponent by focusing on the relational identity with the conversation partner. Through this process, the speaker strengthens his/her social identity by integrating it with the relational identity with the opponent, and the relational identity of the speaker and listener is further strengthened by redefining the relationship in the expanded social context. The process of these conversations is meaningful in that it enables cooperative conflict resolution. The dialogue is distinguished from conformity, avoidance, and compromise, as it does not deny or conceal the social identity of conversation participants. It is also far from the competitive conflict resolution, as it does not undermine the relational identity between conversation participants. In the future, it is necessary to focus on the dialectics of family novels, including Yuhyogongseonhaengrok, as a daily model of cooperative conflict resolution skills. Through this, learners will be able to learn cooperative speaking methods to cope with conflict situations, compare the conversation culture of traditional society with that of modern times, and have opportunities to fundamentally reflect on the essence of dialogue and persuasion.
