상징적 표상법의 이론과 실제

초록
이 논문의 목적은 상징적 표상법(Symbolic Representation Interview：SRI)을 소개하고, 그 교육적 의의를 고찰하는 것이다. 상징적 표상법은 1) 독자가 자신의 독서 과정과 반응을 상징적인 시각 자료로 표현하고, 2) 그 자료를 매개로 하여 자신의 독서 경험을 설명한 후에, 3) 토론을 통해 텍스트에 대한 이해를 확장하는 교수학습법이다. 이 방법은 본래 Patricia Enciso가 사고구술법과 시각화 기법을 결합하여 인터뷰 기법으로 개발한 것이다. 그러나 Jeffrey Wilhelm의 노력으로 현재에는 교수학습과 평가 방법으로 정착되었다. 이 논문의 주요 내용은 크게 세 부분으로 구성된다. I장에서는 독서의 특성을 기반으로 하여 상징적 표상법에 관한 논의의 기반을 마련하였다. II장에서는 상징적 표상법의 개념과 특성을 검토한 후, 대표적인 적용 방법과 지도상의 유의점을 제시하였다. 상징적 표상법의 실제를 다룬 Ⅲ장에서는 교사와 학부모의 이해를 돕고자 세 가지 사례를 제공하였다. 상징적 표상법은 읽기나 문학 영역의 교수학습과 평가 방법으로서 그 교육적 의의가 크고, 적용 방식이 유연하여 활용도가 높다. 향후 상징적 표상법에 대한 현장의 관심과 국어교육학계의 본격적인 연구가 필요하다.
