정체성과 문식성

초록
본고는 최근 문식성 연구에서 중요한 연구 주제로 다루어지고 있는 정체성의 개념과 특성을 고찰하고, 정체성과 문식성의 관계에 대해 살펴본 다음, 지난 30여 년간 문식성 연구에서 정체성이 어떻게 연구되어 왔는지 분석하였다. 또한 이러한 기존 연구 결과들을 바탕으로 하여, 우리 문식성 교육과 문식성 연구에서 정체성의 문제는 어떻게 다루어질 수 있는지 살펴보았다. 구성주의적 관점에서 볼 때, 모든 사회적 의미구성은 사회 구성원들간의 상호작용 속에서 이루어진다. 각 개인은 의미 구성의 참여자로서, 주관적이고 비중립적인 자기인식(정체성)을 바탕으로 하여 사회적 의미구성에 참여한다. 문식 활동은 이러한 사회적 의미구성의 핵심적인 수단이다. 다민족화가 진행되고 민주적 사고의 성장에 따라 성적으로, 계층적으로, 종교적으로, 또 지역적으로, 우리 사회에서 다양한 목소리들이 표출됨에 따라 한국 사회도 이제 정체성의 문제로부터 결코 자유로울 수가 없게 되었다. 문식성 교육의 목적은 문식 활동을 통해 이러한 다양성이 서로 원활하게 소통됨으로써 그 속에서 협상과 조정의 과정이 생겨날 수 있도록 돕는 데 있다. 그런 점에서 앞으로 정체성의 문제는 문식성 연구에서 중요하게 다루어져야 할 필요가 있다.
