Readers’ Awareness of the Standards of Good and Bad Texts -A Study of Medical Students’ Readings of Medical Columns

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to deduct implications for reading education investigating readers’ standards for good texts and bad texts. 51 medical students as participants selected 2 good medical column texts and 2 bad medical column texts individually and composed texts describing the reasons for selection. 2 researchers analyzed participants’ texts and identified various standards for evaluating medical column texts. The findings showed that when asked to select general examples of good texts, the participants focused on “readers’ interest,” “proper examples,” and “value,” but they emphasized “interrelationship of thesis,” “organization,” and “readers’ background knowledge” while selecting high quality reading material for themselves. This results means readers tend to focus minimum standards when they face texts first, and they applicate high-level standards for distinguish more high quality texts.
