Abstract

This study focuses on the symbolic use of modes in the digital environment and aims to derive the educational implications of Korean language by examining the level and aspect of perception about “mode’s informativity” of middle school students who are digital natives. We examined the aspect of perception of informativity in the quantitative and qualitative dimensions. The results showed that the mode that clearly communicates the language information such as “the written language” and “the narration” tended to be perceived as the core mode in the meaning construction. In addition, the level of reading the meaning of the modes showed significant deviations between modes, and the color showed a difference in the level of significance according to the degree of customization of the use of color, even in a single mode. Unlike the theoretical discussion, students tended not to pay much attention to the use of modes that play an important role in understanding structures, such as vectors and layouts. The above discussion suggests the necessity of systematic education on modes, and it is necessary to carry out a follow-up study to examine the students’ understanding and its usage about modes.
