Abstract
This article suggests a new approach to the reader(audience) functioning in the writer's consciousness. We start by discovering that the reader functioning in the writer’s consciousness is not the writer itself, not the audience, but the third person(being). We suggest to call the third person(being) as ‘Hidden Reader’, who is the conversationalist of the writer in the lonely process of writing. The Hidden Reader not only represents the perspective of the anticipated reader(s)/audience(s), but has the ability to look at the writer’s inside view. Therefore it would be good to be called ‘The Other inside of a self’. The Hidden Reader is a critical reader that provides omnidirectional feedbacks to the writer with concerning all kinds of rhetorical situation and the ins and outs of text. During the whole time that the writer is writing, the Hidden Reader provides and sends feedback. The questions or feedback of the Hidden Reader are not limited to special circumstances, but to all situations related to the writing, it involves the outer and inner circumstance or situation. The role of the Hidden Reader is to view the writer's article as an anticipated reader, but if the role of the Hidden Reader is limited to that, there would be no big difference to being called the anticipated reader. However, the hidden reader criticizes/judges the writing from the anticipated reader's point-of-view, and also has insight to what the writer has not directly expressed. The Hidden Reader throws unlimited questions pertaining to all kinds of rhetorical problem. There is going to be selection and exclusion in writing as the Hidden Reader often defends and supports the writer, or raises questions and brings forward problems to the writer, and invokes(refreshes) specific informations and knowledges. This is the way the Hidden Reader manages and controls the writing. Through dialogue(or interaction) between the writer and Hidden Reader, the writer can arrive at a meta-cognition. The goal of education in writing is for the student to acquire the capabilities of creating a competent Hidden Reader.
