The Truth of Action-oriented Words of Children in Elementary Korean Language Class

Abstract
The study aims to contextualize the production of “action-oriented words” by children in elementary Korean language class. I conducted field work in a 3rd grade classroom from March 2009 to January 2010. I focused specifically on children’s action-oriented words dealing with disease, illness, and disability. Children’s action-oriented words are words which rouse or otherwise compel them to behave according to moral values. Children, however, are not consciously aware of how words influence their behavior. Children parrot without thinking words they are instructed to speak. They easily confuse fantastical descriptions of events in fiction with reality. Children develop unrealistic representations of disabled people. I conclude that children should be explicitly instructed to think about the relationship between their words and behavior.
