A Study on Students and Teachers’ Evaluation for Highschool Korean Textbooks

Abstract
It seems the system for Korean textbooks has recently been progressive. It actually is on the verge of one of the most revolutionary change. In Aug 2008, the adapting system for Highschool Korean textbooks has been shifted to the authorization system, and it is expected to provide a positive result compatible with the desire to prevent some negative effects from the government-designation system. Yet, textbooks in Korea has been all passive that textbooks supplied to or made for consumers such as teachers and students are dominant. Instead of being perspective of suppliers, approaches with consumer- centered aspect for textbooks which could assure learners' learning are needed. This study has surveyed 918 highschool freshmen who are studying current Korean textbooks and 81 Korean teachers to examine how the authorized highschool Korean textbooks are being measured and responded by students and teachers. The questionnaire was composed of multiple choice questions. The results show that 30.6% of students and 42.0% of teachers were satisfied, and 15.2% of students and 13.6% of teachers were not satisfied with the current Korean textbooks. What is notable here is that majority of respondents(54.0% of students, 44.4% of teachers) said they are neither satisfied nor dissatisfied with the current textbooks. Suppliers and textbook researchers should never consider it as “It’s OK”. Textbooks are the medium of curriculum, which means what’s even more important than making textbooks is the attitude and the system to modify and supplement the textbooks by reflecting consumers’ opinions on contents of it.
