기본 어휘의 선정 기준 －영어 어휘를 중심으로

초록

본 연구는 영어권에선 사용되는 기본 어휘 선정 기준을 소개하고 이를 바탕으로 한국어 기본 어휘 선정에 적용할 수 있는 방안을 모색해 보았다. 영어권에서는 효과적인 어휘교육을 위해 대규모 말뭉치(corpus, 코퍼스)로 부터 빈도수, 사용범위, 사용분포 등의 객관적인 어휘 선정 기준을 적용하여 가장 유용한 어휘를 추출하여 어휘 목록을 제작하고 있을 뿐만 아니라 하나의 단어 기본형이 포괄하는 굴절과 파생형을 모두 명기한 단어군(word family) 목록 은행을 바탕으로 등급화된 어휘 목록을 개발함으로써 어휘수를 통제한 수준별 교재를 체계적으로 제작하고 있다. 또한 본 연구에서는 어휘 선정 기준의 적용 절차가 어휘 목록의 개발결과에 미치는 영향을 분석하기 위해 소규모의 실험연구를 시행하였고 그 결과를 근거로 교육목적에 따른 효율적인 어휘 선정 기준의 적용절차도 제안하였다. 끝으로 국내에서는 처음으로 이러한 어휘 선정 기준을 적용하여 개발된 국가영어능력평가시험의 어휘 목록 개발 절차를 소개하고 그 과정과 결과를 일반화하여 적용할 수 있는 모델과 시사점을 제시하였다.
