Characteristics of Knowledge as the Content of the Speaking and Listening Strands

Abstract

The writer discusses the characteristics of knowledge in terms of the content of the speaking and listening strands in Korean language education with respect to the 7th national curriculum revision. After classifying the traits of knowledge according to the educational system, he provides suggestions on how to select, organize and present the content of the speaking and listening strands. As enhancing the ability of the product and receiving oral language texts are regarded as the core objectives, it is essential to have experience in speaking and listening to oral texts in various contexts and to internalize practical knowledge. In this respect, the knowledge that learners obtain from speaking and listening education should be practical and personal. Thus, knowledge as the content of education may be classified into two aspects inputs [contents 1] and processes [contents 2]. The former refers to the elements of the content and the latter refers to the content of the standards for each grade or achievement. In the speaking and listening strands, the rationale applied to the selection of the content could be found in the activities of speaking and listening and in the constraints of language, cognition and society that language users would encounter in the processes of producing and receiving text. In organizing content, as a matter of principle, consideration should be given to the focus, integration and hierarchy of the content.
