North Korean Lyric Poetry and Literary Education Seen from the Viewpoint of Multicultural Education

Abstract

The most important virtues of multicultural education are tolerance and respect for diversity, but discussion on multicultural education in Korea leans toward Korean language and culture education for ethnic minorities. Because it is difficult to explain multicultural phenomena in Korean society with races and nations alone, and multicultural education must comprehend the issue of discrimination against various minority groups in Korean society. The subjects of education also need to include all the members of multicultural society. It is because multicultural education is for realizing democracy that implements society respecting the dignity of individuals in various minority groups and leading a human life. From this viewpoint, we considered that North Korean lyric poetry would be a meaningful material for finding directions for multicultural education to be pursued by our education, and examined North Korean lyric poems at the contact point between multicultural education and literary education. Until now, our literary education has assumed a negative view toward the ideological inclination of North Korean literature rather than giving students opportunities to experience North Korean literature. In North Korea, however, numerous poems have been written that express personal naïve feelings in individuals’ daily life since the 1990s. These works can be divided into those expressing emotions permeated with various daily experiences, those expressing the pains of division and fervent desire for reunification, and those revealing passionate love for the national land by describing beautiful natural scenes. Although these poems are non‐mainstream in North Korean literature, they may be meaningful as a starting point of multicultural education so that South Korean learners may embrace ‘differences’.
