Issues for Literacy Education in Multi-Cultural Society

Abstract

The purpsoe of this study is to examine the conception of multicultural literacy in multicultural education, and to suggest some considerations on educational materials and teaching․learning methods in multicultural literacy education. Nowadays, multicultural literacy has to be dealt with significantly in terms of playing an important role in communication. Multicultural literacy can be an ability to understand and express cultural diversity in social-cultural context as well as reading and writing the text. Multicultural literacy education on the basis of multicultural literacy should develop basic literacy including reading and writing skills and extended literacy with functional literacy and critical literacy. This study also investigated multicultural reading materials and teaching․learning methods focused on culturally responsive teaching for multicultural education.
