Abstract
Multicultural society has begun in Australia when Australian government admitted diversities of culture and ethnic races by abolishing White Australia policy and introducing multiculturalism in early 1970s. The Australian Curriculum emphasizes ten general capabilities of students such as literacy, numeracy, information and communications technology (ICT), thinking skills, creativity, self-management, teamwork, intercultural understanding, ethical behaviour, and social competence. It also stresses three interrelated subject categories, the culture of Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders, Asia and Australia’s engagement with Asia, and sustainable patterns of living. Year 2010’s Australian English curriculum shows that Australian English education policy respects both the influence of the Standard Australian English and the diversity of English. Australian English education policy reflects that Standard Australian English contributes to the integration of wide ethnic races. It focuses on the development of a sense of language to enjoy and appreciate language, convey feelings, persuade, entertain, and argue. It emphasizes on the ability to understand, interpret, reflect on and create an increasingly broad repertoire of spoken, written, and multimodal texts. It covers the development of capability of using new communications technologies of 21st century literacy. It stresses the understanding of other cultures, especially Asian cultures. Australian English subject categories is composed of language, literature, and literacy (listening, speaking, reading, writing, and seeing). For English education as a second language, immigrants and foreign students enter school after finishing language school, receive English education in compliance with their English levels, and have help from assistant English teachers. As the English education systems for adult, AMEP, LLNP, and WELL are introduced in this paper. Teaching- learning method for English education in Australia can be categorized as four principles such as spontaneity, practicality, multicultural diversity, and communication ability.
