Korean Language Education to Care for the Happy Life of the Elderly — Focusing on Literary Activities in the Elderly and Youth Service Learning

Abstract
Old age is the longest period of life, and the proportion of the elderly in the total population is rapidly increasing. In particular, old age is a critical period when happiness and unhappiness can be expressed in extreme ways. This study explored how literary activity in old age can support the well-being of the elderly. The psychosocial crisis of old age consists of a confrontational term called ‘integrity versus despair.’ The basic virtue that emerges based on integrity is ‘wisdom’, whereas the core pathology that emerges based on despair is ‘disdain’. Chapter II discusses specific examples of how literary activities can help strengthen integrity and overcome despair. Chapter III focuses on the orientation of the community in which literary activities take place and the principles of the organization and operation of the literary activity program. The following orientations of the literary activity community are proposed: 1)strengthening interdependence between homogeneous and different generations, and 2)strengthening mutuality in service learning. In addition, the following principles of organizing and operating the literary activity program are proposed: 1) the principle of listening, 2)the principle of personalized learning, and 3) the principle of genre diversity and hierarchy.
