언어 이데올로기와 계승어 교육에 대한 고찰

이 연구는 언어 이데올로기와 계승어 교육의 관계를 탐구함으로써 다문화 사회에서의 계승어 교육의 방향성을 모색하는 데 목적이 있다. 다문화 사회가 사회 통합을 능동적인 형태로 지향하기 위해서는 소수 집단이 지닌 언어와 문화에 대한 가치관을 인정하는 것이 출발점이다. 특히 언어 문제에 있어서는 소수 집단이 지닌 언어 이데올로기에 주목할 필요가 있다. 언어 이데올로기는 계승어에 대해 언어적 태도와 행동을 조정하기 때문이다. 계승어 교육과 관련한 언어 이데올로기는 두 가지 양상으로 나타난다. 하나는 계승어에 개인적 또는 사회적으로 긍정적 가치를 부여함으로써 언어의 사용을 장려하고 전수하려는 친계승어 이데올로기이며, 또 다른 하나는 계승어를 공용어 습득의 간섭 요인으로 간주하여 주류 사회로의 빠른 적응과 흡수를 위해 교육을 실시하지 않는 반계승어 이데올로기이다. 계승어 교육에 대한 교육적 시도는 한국 사회와의 능동적 통합을 구현할 수 있는 긍정적인 가치를 지닌다. 계승어 교육의 방향성을 다음과 같이 제시할 수 있다. 첫째, 소수 언어 습득 및 사용에 대한 긍정적 인식을 확산시켜야 한다. 둘째, 다문화 가족 내 소통을 위한 ‘가족 언어 정책’을 수립하여야 한다. 셋째, 언어 습득을 위한 가족 내 역할 구조를 설정하여야 한다. 넷째, 다문화 가족 외부에서의 계승어 소통 기회를 확대하고 질 높은 교육을 제공해야 한다.
