‘Read, Create and Share’ — Design-Based Research for Children’s Digital Literacy Program

Abstract
This research discusses “Read, Create and Share,” a digital literacy-based children’s reading activity program developed as a community-engaged children’s library program during the COVID-19 pandemic. Developed by a design-based research method, the program recommends books to children and encourages them to share their opinions and feelings about books by creating podcasts, drawing pictures, and writing simple texts. For this purpose, two programs were developed by a team comprising a professor, a school librarian, and three undergraduate students who are pre-service teachers. Sixty elementary school students from three school libraries and a special education class participated and shared 41 podcasts and 57 “Bookstragrams.” This study demonstrated that it is important to link traditional/non-digital literacy with digital literacy as multiliteracy to support children’s reading activities. The research also conveyed the importance of “connected learning,” which aids in creating social relationships and networks in specific contexts for learners’ learning, development, and social opportunities. Simultaneously, this program demonstrated the need for detailed coaching through one-on-one or small-scale interactions with learners in children’s reading and digital literacy.
